The Searchlight Gold Beam is a yearly publication that investigates the cultural, ecological and historical treasures of the Mojave desert in Southern Nevada area and beyond, orients visitors and keeps them safe and respectful while exploring, and builds new connections within and between the local rural, tribal and urban communities. Edited by Kim Garrison Means and Steve Radosevich (United Catalysts), the Searchlight Gold Beam shares a deep affection for this part of the world with readers, through science, the arts, fiction, interviews, species identification, storytelling, advice and games -- all wrapped up with a double dose of desert humor!
This first issue is dedicated to the theme Treasures of Avi Kwa Ame, and it explores, not just the creation of a brand new national monument, but also the act of seeking, finding, and treasuring the many wonders, big and small, that make up our communities and our East Mojave landscape. This issue also includes two catalog essays and many wonderful images from the Spirit of the Land: Artists Honor Avi Kwa Ame exhibition.
Contributors include: Neal Desai (National Parks Conservation Association), Dr. Aya Louisa McDonald (UNLV Professor of Art History, Alex Harper (Red Rock Audubon Society), Dr. Michael Webber (CSN Professor of Biology), and Todd Esque (ecologist, Western Ecological Research Center, USGS)
