Pecos River Sound Residency, Soils Turn book launch
We currently have over 100 members who are either sound artists or interested in sound art. Through the pandemic many of our members began buying sound equipment, and recording walks. It was the perfect antidote for our disconnect with nature. In 2022, we started our bi-annual Sound Dialogues (via Zoom), which is coming up again January through May 2026. And, this month, fifteen sound artists will travel from Massachusetts, Kentucky, Colorado, Texas, California and locally, for the first annual Pecos River Sound Residency in Pecos, New Mexico. This all came together organically and is a test run to consider what's possible for 2026. We will be sure to report back. see blog November For October, we will gather the second Indigenizing Dialogues to explore how a movement of Indigenizing dominiant culture can
encourage a greater balance between humans and the more-than-human
world. This month two non-Indigenous artists/members who are focused on LAND as resource and survival will present their work, and an Indigenous member who will respond as a culture bearer, will also share her painting practice focused on reclamation. see below Soils Turn Update: we have decided to take some extra time for the editing/design process, and will now head to the printer in Germany at the end of October. The launch at Printed Matter in NYC has been postponed, for now. All of our previous books have been printed in the US, though this round we learned it will cost 50% less to print in Germany, even with the shipping. Books ordered from Europe will be shipped from Germany and we are expecting to have the US orders ready to go out around Thanksgiving. Apologies for the delay. The list of over 175 artists/scientists included in Soils Turn below Reminder, Novel Bodies is an opportunity to expand your practice to include scientific
posters. If you have questions, please reach out. Deadline 10/15! see Call for Artists below Patricia Watts, founder/curator

This month we will hear from Eliza Evans, who will discuss her series LANDMAN, created to mobilizes mineral rights owners to resist drilling and rematriate lands, and Sarah Knouse, who will present NATIVE SPACES, a digital platform for sharing artful, place-based audio narratives of Indigenous survival. Artist and Indigenous culture bearer Wendy Deschene (Métis), will act as a respondent, sharing her painting practice focused on reclamation, and together we will explore how Indigeous knowledge can inform art practices, as well as contribute to a movement of indigenizing dominate culture.
This event is free for members + one guest. $5 for non-members. All participants MUST REGISTER.

tyler burton
Burton creates sculptures and installations that
explore various environmental issues, such as plastic waste, shelter,
glacial melt, and wildlife habitats. In her 'Fossils of the Future'
series, she examines our dependence on single-use plastics incorporating
actual plastic into her works by creating large monolithic totem like
structures resembling futuristic
core samples of the earth. These pieces are filled with donated or
found plastic and layered with rock, concrete, old paint and resin. www.etylerburton.com
