posey (pamela) moulton
Every year, an estimated 640,000 tons of derelict fishing gear are abandoned in the ocean, resulting in aquatic graveyards. These nets and ropes are made from a cocktail of lethal synthetic polyester and nylon plastics; designed to withstand extreme ocean gales and brutal storms, they take hundreds of years to break down. Haunting our oceans, they entangle marine life, harm habitats and coral reefs, causing economic losses to fisheries and other maritime industries. My art, made from these discards, has been described as part sea creature, part Dr. Seuss. Visitors wonder, ”What is that: a plant or animal or a mysterious creature from a yet-to-be-categorized kingdom?” The sculptures actively resist categorization. www.poseyart.com
