eco consciousness is the thematic of the inaugural ecoartspace online juried show for our artist and art professional membership levels. The show will be blind juried by Eleanor Heartney, distinguished New York art critic and author. Approximately 100 works will be selected for exhibition. Three billboard awards will be given to artists whose work will be presented in the Midwest for three months leading up to the General Election on November 3. The exhibition will be presented as a digital catalogue (PDF), designed to accompany the online show, with an introduction by ecoartspace curators Patricia Watts and Amy Lipton.

eco consciousness, which is defined as showing concern for the environment, is a broad thematic to offer inclusivity. We, however, are encouraging work that is sensitive to the spiritual and the feminist aspects of our human relationship with nature. Artworks selected will be featured online beginning September 1 and will be promoted in our monthly e-Newsletter and our social media channels.

BLIND REVIEW JUROR FOR SHOW SELECTION AND BILLBOARDS
We are very fortunate to have Eleanor Heartney as our inaugural juror, a distinguished New York art critic and author who has written extensively on contemporary art issues for publications including Art in America, Artnews, the Washington Post and the New York Times. Heartney’s most recent books are Doomsday Dreams: The Apocalyptic Imagination in Contemporary Art (2019), and one which she co-authored, The Reckoning: Women Artists of the New Millennium (2017). She also published a survey of over 400 international artists in her book Art & Today (2008), and co-authored After the Revolution: Women Who Transformed Contemporary Art (2007). Heartney has written feature essays on ecological artists including Helen and Newton Harrison, Mel Chin, Agnes Denes, and Alan Sonfist. In 2014, she wrote a provocative article for Art in America titled “Art for the Anthropocene Era.” Heartney was recently interviewed by Barbara Rose for the Brooklyn Rail discussing her new book Doomsday Dreams. She will have an article on eco-feminism in the May 2020 issue of Art in America.

ABOUT ECOARTSPACE: ecoartspace was conceived in 1997 by Patricia Watts in Los Angeles as a venue where visitors could learn about the principles of ecology through immersive environments created by artists. That year she published one of the first websites with a directory of artists addressing environmental issues. In 1999, Watts partnered with east coast curator Amy Lipton, combining forces working from both coasts while operating under the umbrella of SEE, the Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs in Los Angeles, a 501c3 fiscal sponsor. 2019 marked 20 years that Watts and Lipton have been curating art and ecology programs, participating on panels and giving lectures internationally. Combined, they have curated over 60 art and ecology exhibitions, many outdoors in collaboration with artists creating site-specific works. They have worked with over one thousand artists from across the country, some internationally. Beginning 2020, ecoartspace became an LLC membership organization based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
